Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Nii Moi Thompson, has provided deep insight into the ongoing xenophobic tensions and economic challenges in South Africa.
Speaking on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu, he explained that the issues in South Africa go beyond immigration and are rooted in deeper structural economic problems.
He noted that South Africa's manufacturing sector has declined significantly since 1994, weakening its ability to create jobs and absorb new entrants into the labour market.
According to him, the country is facing rising unemployment, a major skills mismatch, and declining capital formation, all of which contribute to frustration on the streets.
Dr. Thompson also highlighted that while foreigners are often blamed, many of the jobs being filled are in sectors where South Africans either lack skills or are unwilling to work, creating a complex labour market paradox.
He further pointed to the impact of the 2008 global financial crisis and long-term economic stagnation, which have affected South Africa's ability to recover and grow sustainably.
Despite the challenges, he acknowledged South Africa's strong infrastructure base but warned that neglect over the past two decades has worsened conditions in key sectors.
He concluded that addressing xenophobia requires tackling deeper economic and institutional weaknesses rather than focusing solely on immigration enforcement.
