Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), Nii Moi Thompson, has called for stronger accountability in Ghana's fight against illegal developments, flooding, and institutional failure.
Speaking on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu, he said he expects not only the demolition of illegal structures but also the arrest of officials who allowed such developments to happen.
According to him, corruption within planning and local government systems plays a major role in the country's recurring urban challenges, including flooding, encroachment on waterways, and poor enforcement of planning laws.
He revealed instances where complaints about illegal encroachment were allegedly ignored, and in some cases escalated back to those responsible for enforcement, exposing deep institutional weaknesses.
Dr. Thompson argued that Ghana's core challenge is not just citizen indiscipline but weak and compromised institutions, particularly at the local government level.
He also stressed that development cannot be driven solely by the private sector, but by strong institutions that enforce planning laws, protect public land, and ensure accountability.
The NDPC Chairman further reflected on global development lessons, including South Africa's economic and employment challenges, highlighting how structural issuesโnot just immigrationโshape national crises.
He concluded that without institutional reform, enforcement of planning regulations, and leadership accountability, Ghana will continue to face preventable disasters such as floods and illegal construction.
