“If 7mm of rain can flood parts of Accra, what happens if we experience 70mm like in 2006?”
Environmental Scientist Prof. Chris Gordon and Urban Development Planner Kofi Kekeli Amedzro of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA) have warned of worsening flood risks in Accra during an interview on Point of View with Bernard Avle.
Prof. Gordon explained that while Ghana has not yet experienced its heaviest rainfall levels, flooding has intensified due to rapid urbanisation, destruction of wetlands, and the replacement of natural surfaces with impermeable concrete structures.
He stressed that water must find its natural pathways, but increasing development is blocking drainage routes and worsening flood impacts even under relatively low rainfall levels.
Kofi Kekeli Amedzro also highlighted how poor enforcement of planning regulations, loss of green infrastructure, and the filling of natural water retention areas are contributing significantly to the flooding situation in Accra and surrounding communities.
Both experts warned that if current rainfall levels are already causing widespread flooding, then heavier rainfall events similar to those recorded in 2006 could lead to a major disaster if urgent action is not taken.
