Environmental Scientist Prof. Chris Gordon and Urban Development Planner Kofi Kekeli Amedzro of the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA) have broken down the worsening flooding situation in Accra on the Point of View show with Bernard Avle.
Prof. Gordon warned that Ghana has not yet experienced its heaviest rainfall, noting that recent rainfall levels are far below past extreme events such as the 2006 floods. However, he stressed that despite lower rainfall intensity, flooding has worsened significantly due to environmental and human-induced changes.
He explained that rapid urbanisation, loss of wetlands, and increasing impervious surfaces are major factors worsening the situation. According to him, water that once had natural pathways can no longer drain properly due to uncontrolled development.
Kofi Kekeli Amedzro also highlighted the “concretisation and tiling” of Accra, stating that unchecked development, poor enforcement of planning schemes, and destruction of green infrastructure and retention ponds are major contributors to flooding across the city.
Both experts warned that if current rainfall levels of around 7mm can cause widespread flooding, then heavier rainfall events like the 70mm recorded in 2006 could result in a major disaster if urgent action is not taken.
