New Abirem to Get First Gold Processing Plant Under Cooperative Mining Scheme

Government has successfully launched the Cooperative Mining Programme despite initial tensions and resistance from a section of youth groups believed to be constituency executives and members of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.

The Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Training Initiative, launched by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Kofi Armah-Buah, is expected to provide meaningful employment for youth in the mining sector while equipping them with the skills needed to carry out their activities responsibly.

Addressing chiefs and residents at a durbar in New Abirem, the Minister announced that the first gold processing facility under the scheme will be established in the Birim North District.

The initiative forms part of efforts to formalize small-scale mining, improve regulation, and promote sustainable mining practices.
