The case involving Akonta Mining Limited and its owner, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been adjourned to June 16 for the continuation of the cross-examination of the prosecution's witness.
During proceedings, lawyers for the defence challenged the prosecution witness's claim that the presence of Akonta Mining's insignia on certain vehicles and equipment automatically proved ownership by the company. The defence argued that such an assertion required further evidence and scrutiny.
Chairman Wontumi, who serves as the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is facing allegations that Akonta Mining engaged in illegal mining activities, including operations within the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve without the necessary approvals from relevant state institutions.
The adjournment means the highly watched case will return to court for further examination of evidence and witness testimony as legal proceedings continue.
