Ghana Pushes Local Refining as Sentuo Receives First Jubilee Crude Shipment

The government has reiterated its commitment to increasing local processing of Ghana's natural resources, stressing that exporting crude oil while importing refined petroleum products is no longer sustainable.
Speaking at the arrival of the first Jubilee crude shipment at the Sentuo Oil Refinery, Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, described the development as a landmark step in Ghana's push for value addition and energy security.
He noted that the current model of exporting crude and importing finished petroleum products has limited job creation and industrial growth in Ghana for decades.
The Minister highlighted that the Sentuo Oil Refinery has completed an initial phase capable of processing 40,000 barrels per day, with plans underway to expand capacity to 100,000 barrels per day.
He also revealed that the Tema Oil Refinery has received one million barrels of crude oil for processing, signalling renewed efforts to strengthen domestic refining capacity.
According to him, Ghana's long-term goal is to ensure that local refineries operate at full capacity so the country can reduce imports and potentially export refined petroleum products.
