US Embassy Raises Alarm Over Rising Arrests Linked to False News

The Press Attaché at the United States Embassy in Ghana, Matthew Asada, has cautioned against using censorship as a tool to combat misinformation and disinformation.
Speaking at the Ghana Journalists Association World Press Freedom Day 2026 Honours Night in Accra, he stressed that efforts to tackle false information must not come at the expense of free expression, press freedom, and democratic values.
Mr. Asada also expressed concern about the growing number of arrests linked to false news, revealing that 14 such cases have been recorded within the first 16 months of the current administration—more than the total recorded during the previous administration's eight years in office.
He emphasized that safeguarding media freedom remains essential to maintaining a healthy democracy while addressing the challenges posed by misinformation.
