A panel of experts has weighed in on the Avenor building collapse during a discussion on Channel One TV with Nana Tuffour Boateng and Fred Djabanor, calling for urgent reforms in Ghana's approach to building safety and disaster management.
Engineer and Policy Analyst Michael Kosi Dedey stressed the need for Ghana to make disaster investigation reports publicly accessible, arguing that the country continues to repeat mistakes due to a lack of learning from past incidents.
Dr. Nana Yaw Akwadaa, Executive Director of the Bureau of Public Safety, warned that Ghana is losing public trust in its emergency response systems and called for clear national standards and thresholds for emergency response, adding that failure to learn from past disasters poses a major public safety risk.
President of the Ghana Institution of Engineering, Ing. Ludwig Annang Hesse, also urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to strictly enforce building regulations and ensure all structures receive proper certification before construction.
The panel collectively emphasized the need for stronger enforcement, transparency, and accountability to prevent future building collapses in Ghana.
