Syria pushes to close displacement camps as 6 million remain uprooted

Nearly six million Syrians remain displaced within their own country following almost 14 years of civil war, with around a quarter still living in camps. The Syrian government has set a deadline to close all displacement camps by the end of 2026, calling on aid agencies to redirect resources towards rebuilding shattered towns and villages. However, vast swathes of the country remain in ruins, with many of the most vulnerable — widows, the elderly, and those who lost everything — unable to return without financial support or habitable homes. The UN refugee agency estimates 1.6 million people have returned to Syria since the fall of the former regime, but nearly six million remain displaced.

Al Jazeera's Heidi Pett reports from Idlib, Syria.
