Armenia votes in pivotal election after Nagorno-Karabakh loss
Armenians are heading to the polls in parliamentary elections that many see as a pivotal moment in the country's geopolitical direction — whether to deepen ties with Europe or restore relations with Russia. It is the first vote since Armenia lost control of Nagorno-Karabakh to Azerbaijan in 2023, displacing more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who backs a peace deal with Baku and closer European integration, faces challenges from pro-Russia rivals including former president Robert Kocharyan and billionaire Samvel Karapetyan.
