Senegal Political Rift Deepens as Sonko Takes Parliamentary Leadership

Senegal's former prime minister Ousmane Sonko has been elected to lead the PASTEF party in parliament, deepening a political rift with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The decision comes weeks after Sonko was dismissed from government, triggering tensions between the presidency and a parliamentary majority controlled by his party.

While supporters describe the situation as a normal democratic “cohabitation,” others see a widening split at the heart of Senegal's leadership.

The dispute unfolds against a backdrop of economic uncertainty, including concerns over debt, IMF funding, and competing strategies for financial recovery.
