'They die as they arrive': Ebola is spreading in eastern DRC

In a town at the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), some patients have come to the hospital too late – only to "die as they arrive or within 24 hours."

The Africa CDC said the first cases were reported in late April in Bunia, the capital of Ituri province, and the nearby Mongbwalu health zone, a high-traffic mining area. However, officials can't pinpoint the source. The outbreak may have started weeks earlier and gone unnoticed. The medical director at the Mongbwalu General Hospital, Richard Lokudu, said public hesitancy, which he described as "pockets of resistance," has hampered the response.
