Africa Faces AI Risks as Regulation Lags Behind Innovation

As artificial intelligence and data-driven systems evolve rapidly, concerns are growing about the gap between innovation and regulation, particularly in Africa.

Speaking at the Global Data Festival in Nairobi, technology policy researcher Josephine Kaaniru warns that AI is already influencing real-world decisions, from healthcare costs to insurance premiums, often without local context or safeguards.

Experts say many systems used across the continent are developed elsewhere, raising concerns about bias, data privacy, and digital dependency.

While AI offers major opportunities, researchers caution that regulation is struggling to keep pace with its real-world impact, creating risks for individuals and institutions alike.
