The ninth solar term on the traditional Chinese calendar, known as Grain in Ear, or Mangzhong, heralds the peak of summer planting and harvesting. It sees rising temperatures and abundant rain. In the paddy fields of southern China, farmers yoke their oxen and plough the land in a race against unpredictable rainfall, while the north is busy harvesting wheat. As Southern Song poet Lu You wrote, "Timely rain falls at Grain in Ear; all fields bustle with transplanting rice seedlings." It is a time brimming with activity as the cycle of harvest and renewal turns.
