Farmers Demand Halt on Rice Imports to Protect Local Production

The Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) is calling on government to immediately suspend rice imports for at least six months.

According to the association, the move is necessary to address a growing glut of unsold locally produced rice, which they warn is threatening farmer incomes and undermining efforts toward national rice self-sufficiency.

PFAG says more than 90 per cent of rice farmers across the country are currently holding significant volumes of unsold stock, despite various policy interventions aimed at boosting local production and improving market access.

The association argues that without urgent action, the local rice industry could face serious setbacks, affecting livelihoods and food security goals.
