Agriculture Minister Criticises Low Budget Allocation to Farming Across Africa

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has expressed concern over the failure of many African governments to fulfill their commitment to allocate at least 10 percent of their annual national budgets to agriculture and rural development.

According to the Minister, some countries dedicate less than one percent of their national budgets to the agricultural sector, a situation he described as grossly inadequate for addressing poverty, food insecurity, and sustainable economic growth.

He stressed that increased investment in agriculture remains critical to boosting productivity, creating jobs, strengthening food systems, and improving livelihoods across the continent.

The remarks come amid renewed discussions on food security, agricultural transformation, and the role of the sector in Africa's long-term development agenda.
