Goodwill and geopolitics: Manila's puzzling China policy

China-Philippines relations stand at a crossroads. On one side, China has offered practical support, including fuel and fertilizer assistance. On the other, Manila continues to heighten tensions in the South China Sea while moving closer to outside powers in sensitive waters east of Taiwan. When Chinese assistance is dismissed as "packaging and deception," and goodwill is filtered through political narratives, is the foundation of bilateral relations being steadily eroded? Can Manila separate short-term political calculations from the long-term interests that China and the Philippines, as neighbors, ultimately share?
