Lebanon seeks international presence as UNIFIL mandate nears its end
UN peacekeeping troops in southern Lebanon are set to withdraw by the end of the year as UNIFIL's mandate expires, largely due to Israeli pressure accusing the force of failing to prevent Hezbollah's military buildup. France is leading international discussions on a post-UNIFIL security arrangement, with some European nations seeking to maintain a military presence to avoid a power vacuum. The US has shifted security talks to the Pentagon, sidelining European partners from ceasefire monitoring mechanisms established after the 2024 conflict.
