Former Energy Minister, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has called on government to stop investing public funds in gas processing projects that he believes can be efficiently handled by the private sector.
Speaking at the University of Ghana's Department of Political Science, he argued that government should focus on policy direction and regulation, rather than direct investment in gas processing infrastructure.
He cited Ghana's energy planning challenges, stressing that long-term strategy should prioritise reliable fuel supply for thermal power generation rather than overreliance on domestic gas availability.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh also criticised aspects of the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant, suggesting that its design limits the extraction of valuable gas by-products before producing lean gas for electricity generation.
He proposed that Ghana could explore partnerships with privately developed facilities instead of duplicating investments in similar infrastructure.
Additionally, he called for broader reforms in the power sector, including strengthening the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, encouraging private sector participation in generation, and improving efficiency within the Electricity Company of Ghana.
