Afari Military Hospital Abandoned as KATH Battles Severe Congestion

While the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), the only major referral facility in the Ashanti Region, continues to struggle with severe congestion at its Accident and Emergency Unit, the 500-bed Afari Military Hospital has been left in a state of neglect.

The facility, which was designed as a state-of-the-art medical complex, is now overgrown with weeds, with installed medical equipment gathering dust and major sections of the building deteriorating due to lack of maintenance.

The hospital, constructed by the Euroget Group on Afari land, was intended to include 50 interconnected medical and non-medical buildings featuring operating theatres, delivery rooms, laboratories, a mortuary, staff housing, and advanced medical infrastructure.

However, the project has missed several completion deadlines and remains abandoned, raising concerns about wasted public investment and Ghana's healthcare infrastructure gap.

The situation has intensified calls for government intervention to complete and operationalize the facility to ease pressure on Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
