Political Violence Casts Shadow Over Colombia’s Presidential Race

Candidates are campaigning behind bulletproof barriers and anti-drone systems, while attacks on campaign workers and political activists have heightened concerns about the influence of armed groups on the electoral process.

The violence began with the killing of conservative presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay during a campaign event in Bogotá and has continued with bomb attacks, ambushes and threats targeting political figures and their supporters.

Opposition parties blame the government's security policies, while supporters say political violence remains a longstanding challenge that predates the current administration.

Despite a 2016 peace agreement with the FARC, violence continues to shape Colombia's political landscape.
