CPEC at a Crossroads: Ambition, Security Risks and China–Pakistan Economic Vision

The China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of China's Belt and Road Initiative, stretches nearly 3,000 kilometres, linking China's Xinjiang region to Pakistan's deep-sea port of Gwadar.

Billed as a “gateway to shared prosperity,” the multi-billion dollar project aims to transform Pakistan's infrastructure, energy capacity and industrial base while offering China faster access to markets in the Middle East and Africa.

But the corridor passes through Pakistan's restive Balochistan region, where separatist groups accuse the state of exploitation and have carried out repeated attacks on construction sites and Chinese personnel.

Despite ongoing security challenges, Islamabad and Beijing are pushing ahead with the next phase of development focused on industrialisation, agriculture and technology, with hopes of significant long-term economic gains.
