Putin and Xi show unity, but fail to reach deal on Russia's key gas pipeline | DW News

Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded his two-day visit with China's Xi Jinping, stating that Russian-Chinese relations are at an "unprecedentedly high level." However, not everything went according to plan. Putin arrived in Beijing hoping to secure a major gas pipeline deal, which is seen as vital for Russia's economic future. Yet, despite the warm words and show of unity, no agreement was reached. Is China deliberately holding back, and what does that reveal about the true state of the partnership? We ask Mikhail Alexseev, professor of Political Science at San Diego State University, and American foreign policy analyst Ryan Hass for an assessment.
