Hostel Fee Relief: NUGS Calls Rent Control Decision “Timely and Appropriate”

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has described the directive by the Rent Control Department for hostel operators to suspend any planned fee increases for the 2026/2027 academic year as timely and appropriate.

The directive, issued in collaboration with the Office of the Rent Commissioner, instructs all private hostel owners to halt intended fee increments ahead of a broader stakeholder engagement on accommodation pricing.

Speaking to Channel One News, NUGS President Rashid Ibrahim said the move is a step in the right direction, especially at a time when students are facing rising cost-of-living pressures.

The engagement is expected to produce sustainable guidelines for hostel pricing and improve fairness in student accommodation.
