The World Health Organization (WHO) says wastewater surveillance can play a critical role in strengthening Ghana's public health system by improving disease monitoring and response.

Technical Lead for Sanitation and Wastewater at WHO, Kate Medlicott, explained that wastewater data can help identify gaps in existing clinical surveillance systems and allow countries like Ghana to better target public health resources.

She noted that Ghana must first determine priority diseases and address weaknesses in its current monitoring systems to fully benefit from this approach.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Wastewater and Environmental Surveillance Meeting 2026, she added that wastewater analysis can complement traditional health systems by tracking how diseases spread and identifying communities most affected.

Health experts say this method could significantly improve early detection of outbreaks and enhance Ghana's disease control strategies.
