Gaza engineers turn organic waste into fertiliser and cooking gas amid severe shortages
Destroyed infrastructure, fuel shortages and limited landfill access have triggered a growing waste crisis in Gaza following more than two years of Israel's war on Gaza. A group of young engineers is turning organic waste into cooking gas and liquid fertiliser using simple, low-resource methods. The project aims to ease shortages and support local farmers struggling with depleted supplies and damaged agriculture. Waste is collected, processed and placed in sealed containers where bacteria produces gas and fertiliser over several weeks. The initiative faces major challenges due to restrictions on equipment, transport limitations and worsening economic conditions. Farming in Gaza has declined sharply, with many greenhouses left empty and crops failing due to lack of inputs. Engineers say the project offers a modest but important solution in difficult conditions.
