Libya marks 15 years since uprising that toppled Gaddafi as political division deepens

Thousands of people have taken to the streets of Misrata to commemorate the 14th anniversary of Libya's February 17th revolution in 2011. The city, which suffered some of the heaviest destruction and casualties during the uprising, regards the date as sacred despite ongoing political divisions and hardship. Since 2011, Libya has been split between two rival governments: the internationally recognised administration in the west and a parallel government controlled by Khalifa Haftar in the east. Residents chose to hold their own grassroots celebration ahead of Thursday's official ceremony, rejecting what many see as politically motivated events disconnected from popular sentiment.

Al Jazeera's Malik Traina reports from Misrata, Libya.
