Dennis Wedam breaks down former Capital Bank CEO William Ato Essien’s bail grant

The Court of Appeal has granted the embattled founder of the defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien, a 10 million cedi pending the appeal of his sentence. The bail comes with two sureties and an order for Essien to deposit his passport with the court and report to the registrar once a month. Ato Essien, who in October 2023 was given a 15-year jail term in hard labour by an Accra High Court, appealed the sentence.

He subsequently filed a bail application pending the appeal in May but was refused by the High Court. He then escalated the matter to the Court of Appeal. In court on Wednesday, July 30, Ato Essien's lawyers argued that his health was deteriorating and pleaded for him to be granted bail for medical treatment.
