A different note: Why the lack of women in classical music?

In Ancient Greece, women took to the stage, but with the exception of Sappho, the lyrical poet from Lesbos, few composed their own pieces. In the Middle-Age, the Church banned women from making music. Considered impure, their distracting presence wasn't welcomed in the choir.
