The war in Ukraine has pushed Russia to seek closer ties with China and other international partners. Foreign ministers from the BRICS group of emerging economies are meeting in Cape Town, ahead of a leaders' summit in August.

That's playing out right now in Cape Town, where foreign ministers from the BRICS group of emerging economies are meeting. Brazil, Russia, India, China and hosts South Africa are discussing the possible expansion of the bloc. Oil-producing nations including Saudi Arabia and Iran are among the candidates. It's increasingly seen as an alternative to Western geopolitical dominance.
