Hong Kong's 'one country two systems' formula: 'We are far away from what was intended'

President Xi Jinping hailed China's rule over Hong Kong on Friday as he led 25th anniversary celebrations of the city's handover from Britain, insisting that democracy was flourishing despite a years-long political crackdown that has silenced dissent. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that China had failed to meet its handover commitments. For more analysis on China's 'one country two systems' formula of governance for Hong Kong, FRANCE 24 is joined by Jean-François Di Meglio, President of Asia Centre, a research institute based in Paris. Mr. Di Meglio asserts that "Boris Johnson is right, but unfortunately Boris Johnson is speaking very very late in the day. The UK authorities should have voiced their opinion long ago. Between 1984 and 1997, they had clout. After 1997 they could've expressed their voice. No one heard them, so Xi Jinping is very right" when he says that the international community has universally approved of China's implementation of the Sino-British Joint Declaration establishing 'one country, two systems' for Hong Kong.
