US: California tribe grapples with missing native women crisis

The US Congress has designated May 5th as a day of awareness of the many epidemic of missing and murdered Native American women. The FBI says in 2020 alone more than 5,200 women were reported missing. A 2021 report by a government watchdog found the true number of missing and murdered Indigenous women is unknown due to reporting problems, distrust of law enforcement and jurisdictional conflicts. The epidemic has spurred the Yurok Tribe in California to issue an emergency declaration and brought increased urgency to efforts to build California's first database of such cases and regain sovereignty over key services.

Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports from Humboldt County, California.
