New CDU head Friedrich Merz expected to pull party to the right | DW News

Germany's center-right Christian Democrats have just elected a new leader. Friedrich Merz will take over from Armin Laschet, who led the party's ill-fated 2021 election campaign. Support for Merz was cemented when he won the first chairmanship poll last month. Ahead of today's vote at an online party conference, Merz called for unity. He will be the party's third leader since Angela Merkel stepped down from the post in 2018.
