Thousands of people gathered at their balconies and windows to applaud the frontline workers, when COVID-19 swept accross Europe in spring 2020.

But applause for healthcare workers did not change their situation for the better. In many places around the world, they are taking to the streets, demanding more money and more hiring to lighten the intense workload.
