When autopilot isn’t paying attention | Tesla slams into truck in Taiwan

The SpaceX astronauts will be hoping for a safer trip than this fellow Musk-eteer.

An Elon Musk-built Tesla 3 traveling at 68mph plowed into an overturned truck in Taiwan on Monday, despite its semi-autonomous 'Autopilot' allegedly being engaged.

According to local news, that's the claim of the driver, 53-year-old Mr Huang – who obviously didn't see the gigantic truck lying across the highway in front of him, either, and slammed the brakes on far too late. And neither Huang nor the car spotted the truck's driver, who can be seen on the road, frantically trying to warn oncoming traffic.

The Tesla Autopilot system isn't a self-driving system and comes with a disclaimer that it's “intended for use with a fully attentive driver” – hello Mr Huang – but several cases have been reported of Teslas in Autopilot mode striking other vehicles, including trucks. Good news for the two men aboard Musk's rocket: there are no trucks in space.
