Armed At 18? | Dw Documentary

Under Germany's new military service rules, every man born in 2008 or later receives a letter when he turns 18 requiring him to complete a Bundeswehr questionnaire, known as a "declaration of readiness". Women can participate voluntarily but are not required to fill out the form.

Unlike Germany's former conscription system, which was suspended in 2011, military service remains voluntary. However, they may be invited for a medical and fitness assessment.

The reform comes as Germany seeks to strengthen its defense capabilities. In 2026, the government plans to spend more than €108 billion on defense, while the Bundeswehr aims to increase its active-duty force from around 184,000 to 260,000 soldiers over the next decade.

The reactions among young Germans range from approval and a sense of duty to skepticism, rejection and protest.
