Surviving War | Dw Documentary
Before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Dmytro “Dok” Dokunov was a filmmaker living in an eco-community. While documenting his life, he was drafted into a combat unit of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and sent to the front. During the Kherson campaign, several of his comrades were killed. Promoted to commander, he was later deployed to the city of Bakhmut, where he was injured in urban combat, while many others never returned.
More than 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since the start of the war, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and many remain missing. Those still fighting on the front lines carry countless invisible wounds of war. The psychological toll, and how soldiers cope with trauma, is of growing concern.
