The Dark Side Of Salmon Farms | Dw Documentary

Salmon consumption has skyrocketed, making it one of the most popular fish across the US, Europe and Japan. To meet this huge demand, over 500 million salmon are farmed every year, accounting for around 70% of total global salmon supply. Norway dominates the industry as the world's leading producer.

Up to 120,000 salmon are often confined within a single net-pen. Overcrowding provides ideal conditions for the rapid spread of diseases and parasites. In 2023 alone, more than 60 million farmed salmon died prematurely in Norway. The causes were severe disease outbreaks and fatal injuries suffered during aggressive treatments used to combat parasites.

As the aquaculture industry expands, experts and activists are increasingly questioning the sustainability and ethics of these high-intensity farming methods.
