The End Of Animal Testing? | Dw Documentary
Before drugs can reach the market, they must first undergo a rigorous process to make sure that they work and aren't harmful to humans. One stage in this process is animal testing.
The EU generally still requires animal testing for drugs, but it also has strict laws to minimize animal use and promote alternatives when scientifically valid. Animal testing for cosmetics is completely banned in the EU but not for medicines. In the US in 2023, a new law was introduced eliminating the requirement for drugs in development to be tested on animals.
To avoid animal suffering, scientists are increasingly looking at more humane, non-animal alternative research methods. Startups like Alveolix believe that with the help of quantum computing they can eliminate some forms of animal testing by creating replicas of human organs that can be used for testing.
