Arjen Robben Retires From International Football

Arjen Robben has retired from international duty having won 96 caps for the Netherlands.

Arjen Robben has announced his retirement from international football on the day the Netherlands failed to book their place at the 2018 World Cup.

Robben, the Bayern Munich winger, netted twice during Tuesday's defeat of Sweden, which was not enough to overtake them in the hunt for a place in Russia next summer.

The Dutch had to win by a seven-goal margin, but in failing to do so they will sit out their second successive international tournament - having also failed to qualify for Euro 2016.

The 33-year-old, whose club career has also taken in spells with Chelsea and Real Madrid, retires from the international game with 37 goals and 29 assists to his name from 96 appearances.

After the final whistle in Amsterdam, Robben said: "It's a good time to pass the torch to the next generation."
