Sabon Zongo wins Chief Imam gold cup

Accra, Feb 8, GNA - Sabon Zongo won the Chief Imam gold cup at the weekend when they defeated Town Council Lane (TCL) by a lone goal in the finals of a soccer gala competition among Muslim Communities to round off this year's Id El Adah celebrations.

Sabon Zongo scored the winner early in the match when Tanko Musa spiked in a lose ball from outside the box after the TCL goalkeeper had left his line.

Thereafter, TCL throttled harder but try as they did, they could not restore parity until the final whistle.

Mr Okuley Nortey, MP for Ablakuma Central presented the trophy to the skipper of the victorious team. The winners and the first and second runners up received various cash prizes as well.

In the semi final matches, Sabon Zongo beat Zongo Lane by three goals to two on penalties, with Nii Lantey Vanderpuje missing his kick to hand over victory to Sabon Zongo, while TCL defeated Sukura 5 - 4, also on penalties.

At the quarter final stage, star studded New Town which paraded the likes of Alhaji Rashid Bawa, acting minister of State in charge of Education and Sports and Kwame Ali, a former striker of Accra Great Olympics and Hearts of Oak failed to advance when they lost by a lone goal to Zongo Lane.

In all, 12 teams registered to participate in the competition but Fadama and Tudu failed to turn up, making the final roll call a ten team affair.

Other teams, which took part in the gala were Casuals, Adabraka, Darkumah, Sukura, Nima and Abeka.
