Re-Collation Of Pru Results Today
Sunyani -- The Electoral Commission (EC) has directed that the results of the presidential and parliamentary elections in the Pru Constituency in the Brong Ahafo Region should be re-collated.
The collation will take place at the regional office of the EC today, December 21, 2004 at 10 a.m. in response to an appeal by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
This was contained in a letter signed by the Regional Director of the EC, Mr Amadu Sulley, to the Regional Police Commander requesting him to provide security at the collation centre.
Copies of the letter were sent to all political parties in the constituency that participated in the December 7 general election.The letter said the Atebubu District Electoral Officer had already been directed to invite two representatives of the constituency executive of the political parties that contested the polls to witness the re-collation execise.
It also invited two representatives each of the regional executive of the various political parties and the media to witness the re-collation of the results.The letter, however, stated that entry to the premises on the collation day would be strictly by invitation, adding that the security personnel would be provided with information on all the invited people to the ceremony.
It called for co-operation from all stakeholders to ensure the success of the exercise.In a related development, the Brong Ahafo Regional Secretariat of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described the decision of the EC to re-collate the results as “dangerous, irregular,subversive, unacceptable, collusive, unfair and improper”.
A statement to the Regional Director of the EC, dated December 19, 2004, and signed by Mr A. K. Kusi, the Regional Secretary of the NPP, said, “In a democratic society like ours, the remedy available to any aggrieved person under the Constitution and PNDC Law 284 is to go to court.”
It said the NPP would, therefore, not be a party to what it described as a grand design of collusion, adding that “we shall not be available at your proposed re-collation”.The statement said the party had referred the matter to its team of lawyers who would sooner than later drag the EC to court if it carried out the re-collation exercise.
In another development, Mr Kusi said in an interview that he saw no reason why a similar petition sent to the EC earlier by Prof Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi, the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Techiman North Constituency, on irregularities in the December 7 general election in his constituency was not dealt with but the one by the NDC was being attended to “with the speed of an aircraft”.
