AHEAD OF THE Glo-CAF Awards scheduled for March 1, 2007 at the International Conference Centre in Accra, sports enthusiasts who formed a fan club in support of the Ivorian international and Chelsea striker, Didier Drogba, are very optimistic that their idol would emerge African footballer of the year.

Mr Bernabey Lago, chairman of the Didier Drogba Fan club, who stormed the Daily Guide offices last Monday, said the club, which was formed on May 13, 2006 with over 500,000 active members, has been holding regular meetings in Accra when it matters.

He observed the club is open to Africans who are interested in the promotion of sports.

According to Mr. Lago, in October last year, thirty members of the fan club were in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, to support Didier Drogba in the country's African cup qualifier against Gabon.

Mr. Lago revealed that it is the third club to be formed in support of the Chelsea striker, after those of London and La Cote d'Ivoire.
“We organise a monthly four-nation football match with a trophy at stake.”

He said in connection with the Glo-CAF African best player Award in Accra, Ghana, on March 1, 2007, all members of the club will be at the Kotoka International Airport a day before the awards night to welcome Didier Drogba, who will attend the event with other nominees.
