Exchequers win APS Hockey Gala

Exchequers of Bank of Ghana defeated Golden Sticks of Ghana Commercial Bank Limited 4-3 on penalties to win this year's Atlantic Port Services (APS) Hockey gala played at the National Hockey Pitch in Accra on Saturday. Scores at the end of their 30 minutes (15 minutes each half) regulation time was 0-0.

The game, which was started in a whirlwind fashion, saw Golden Sticks, the defending champions making incursions into their opponent's vital area but good defensive work by Samuel Okine, Aziz Adimah and ably, supported by goalkeeper Robert Aryee, robbed them of any goal. Both teams resumed the second session with determination but tried as they, did they could not find the net till end of the regulation time.

In the opening match, Multisticks edged out Kingsticks 1-0, Golden Sticks had a walkover Reformers. Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS) eliminated Citizens 2-0, while Exchequers beat Fire Service 3-0. In the quarterfinal matches, Golden Sticks trounce Veterans 4-0, Trustees eliminated CEPS 1-0, while Multisticks had a walkover Marine Sticks.

Golden Sticks beat Trustees 1-0 in the semi-final stage while Exchequers humiliated Mutisticks 6-0. Fire Service beat Prison Service 1-0 in the finals to win the Ladies category while GAHA Stars defeated Multi Babies 1-0 to win the Juvenile event.

At the end of the matches, Mrs Victoria Hajar, Managing Director of Atlantic Port Services Limited, called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to equip the first and second cycle schools to popularise hockey.
