U-20 AFCON: Ghana’s Black Satellites through to quarter-finals despite 2-1 defeat to Gambia

The Ghana U-20 team has booked qualification to the quarter-finals of the 2021 Total CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament after finishing as the third-best team in Group C.

Nicknamed the Black Satellites, the West African giants today played against the Baby Scorpions at the Stade Municipal Nouadhibou in the last Group C match of the tournament being staged in Mauritania.

Needing a win to finish the group as leaders, the Ghana team bottled it and in the end lost to the less fancied Gambia side.

On the matchday, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku scored with a magnificent strike in the 9th minute to shoot the Black Satellites into the lead on the back of an explosive start from both teams.

Staying focused after conceding, the Gambian side fought back to win 2-1 at the end of the 90 minutes thanks to goals from Kejally Drammeh and Lamarana Jallow.

The result tonight means Gambia finished second from Group C with Ghana in third.

With four points, the Black Satellites are able to sail through to the quarter-finals of the U-20 AFCON where they are now set to take on Cameroon.
