Mfantsiman Old Girls raise 250 million cedis for endowment fund
Accra, April 6, GNA - A five-year Endowment Fund launched by Mfantsiman Old Girls Association (MOGA) in Accra yielded 250 million cedis at a ceremony in Accra.
The Association has a target of five billion cedis to improve upon the school's infrastructure within the next five years. Launching the fund, Mr. Ato Essuman, a Member of Council of State commended the Old Girls for their initiative to complement the government's efforts to give quality education to the youth. Mr Essuman, who is also the Chief Director of the Ministry of Education and Sports stated that the resources in the national kitty have been over-stretched by the increasing demand of projects from communities, and institutions.
"Therefore the government alone cannot meet the demands of our educational institutions", he stressed, adding that parents, past students and indeed each and everyone has a role to play. "I am happy that by this effort, you live up to your school's motto, "obra nye woara abo" (life is what you make it) and urged them to keep it up as a heritage for future generations. In a speech read on her behalf, Mrs Angelina Baiden-Amissah, Deputy Minister of Education and Sports underscored the need for old students to pay back what they have acquired from their alma mater.
Mr Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Member of Parliament for Mfantseman West and a Deputy Minister for Tourism and Modernisation of the Capital City urged the leadership of MOGA and school authorities to manage the fund well to make it achieve the purpose for which it was launched. Mrs Sarah Wilson, the headmistress said the school, which used to be the pride of Mfantseman was withering at an alarming rate and therefore needed support from all her daughters.
Mrs Wilson mentioned completion of an assembly hall, which was started about five years ago, accommodation for staff, expansion of the dinning hall to address the situation whereby students eat in batches and landscaping to check erosion and improvement of water supply as some of the problems which needed urgent attention. Ms Matilda Attoh, National president of MOGA said their goal was to mobilise resources to create congenial environment for educating girls.
