Fire Service Grounded After Downpour At Koforidua

An hour of rainfall on Thursday afternoon in the New Juaben Municipality left roads and homes in the area flooded.

Most notably, personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service in the Eastern Region Headquarters was unable to move out of their premises to provide relief support.

Some of the areas affected by the flooding were Srodae, Centra Market, Ofos line, Nsukwao, and Zongo.

The flood waters also swept away items belonging to traders who had displayed wares around the Central Market.

Some residents have accused city authorities of failing to desilt choked gutters and drains, which they believe caused the flooding.

The city authorities, in turn, have accused the traders and market women who sell along the drains of dumping refuse into the drains.

Authorities at the New Juaben North and South, NADMO, Town and Country Planning, Fire Service and the Police are yet to comment on the extent of damage of today’s floods.

Koforidua, the Regional Capital of the Eastern Region, is known to face such flooding around this time of the year.

A taxi driver and two other passengers at Nkubem close to Old Estate Kenkey Factory recently lost their lives after post-downpour-flooding.

But City authorities are yet to find lasting solutions to deal with the perennial floods which have been described by many as “Annual Rituals.”
