Attivor, Gyapong Ready To Battle NPP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region has promised to make it impossible for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region to improve their fortunes in the 2020 election.

In the 2016 elections, the NPP made huge inroads in the Volta Region which is the stronghold, otherwise known as the “world bank”, of the opposition NDC. In 2012, the NDC garnered over 800,000 votes to get John Mahama into office. However, in 2016, its votes reduced to a little over 600,000.

The NPP had a little over 100,000 votes in 2012 and secured over 130,000 votes in 2016. Besides, it won one constituency in a region they find very difficult to make progress.

In an exclusive interview with DAILY GUIDE, John Kwadwo Gyapong, who retained his chairmanship position for Volta NDC and his contender, Dzifa Aku Attivor, said the gains of the NPP were a mirage which would soon be eroded. Therefore, they have merged their two teams that fiercely contested each other in the recent regional elections to ensure the NDC 'wipes out' the NPP completely from the Volta Region.

According to them, the contest was a family affair and hence there was no need for continued contests after the elections had ended, particularly when they are both in full support of former President Mahama's come back.

The two were speaking in Ho at the residence of the retained Regional Chairman, Kwadwo Gyapong, when Dzifa and her team, including Egypt Kudoto, who lost the secretaryship position, went to visit, congratulate and strategize with the new chairman. They were seen having a hearty chat during the interaction.

Dzifa Attivor, who gave Gyapong a fierce contest reiterated statements in her congratulatory press statement issued last Sunday saying, “The elections are over and so we do not have Team Dzifa or Team Gyapong, but Team NDC Volta.”

Madam Dzifa and Chairman Gyapong indicated that the relationship between them was like siblings and they had been working together for a long time hence “all attempts to knock our heads together will not wash and never wash.”

On his part, Chairman Gyapong indicated that he would run an all-inclusive administration that would see victors and vanquishers play key roles in getting the NDC back into power. He added that his team would ensure that the only seat they lost in the northern part of the Volta Region is reclaimed for the NDC to ensure 100 per cent representation in Parliament. He admitted that it would not be an easy task, but with all hands on deck, adequate distribution of resources, commitment and team work, they would overcome the challenge.
