Berekum citizens defy downpour to raise funds for dev’t projects
The chiefs and people of Berekum in the Brong Ahafo Region last Sunday defied a late evening downpour to still go ahead with their fund-raising programme in aid an ultra-modern health facility that befits the status of Berekum, the Golden City of Ghana.
Residents and citizens of the area, both home and abroad, gathered at the Omanhene Park at Berekum in their numbers to support this worthy course, which is being spearheaded by the Berekumman Citizens Association.
Membership of the Association is mainly made up of indigenes of Berekum in Ghana and elsewhere, especially in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain and Italy, among several others.
The Berekumman Citizens Association, which was founded by Evangelist Paul Osei Agyeman, primarily seeks to mobilise and unite Berekum citizens to embark on developmental initiatives in the area.
Evangelist Paul Osei Agyeman, also known as Agyapasei, speaking at the fundraising programme explained that he thought it wise to establish the Association upon the realization that Berekum seems to be lagging behind in terms of development.
He paid glowing tribute to ABTS, renowned timber merchant in Berekum, for his financial support toward the establishment of the Association and called on all those who have the interest of the area at heart to rally behind the association to facilitate the execution of its plans.
The Global Chairman of the Association, Rev. Kofi Kyere Diabour stressed that the association is not a political organization and that its main preoccupation was to champion the progress of Berekum.
“We are not NPP, we’re not NDC, we’re CPP or PNC and we’re not PPP. We’re only for the unity and development of Berekum”, he said.
He also said the Association, together with its partners, organized Breast-cancer screening for residents of Berekum recently, which benefitted about 250 women, adding that, “going forward, the association would soon acquire a Breast-screening equipment and train nurses to operate them for the benefit of the people of the area.”
“I would also want to assure all the women who benefitted from the Breast-sreeening and were told to seek further medical attention that the Association would financially support them in that regard”, Rev. Kyere Diabour added.
According to him the Association is currently in discussions with the Berekum Municipal Assembly on the construction of a modern place of convenience at the main Berekum market soon.
“We want to touch lives, we want people to know that we think about them and we care about them. I would therefore call on our two MPs, our MCE and all public servants and all citizens alike to contribute their quota in developing the area.”
The Chief of Kato and the Werempehene of the Berekum Traditional Area, Osabarimah Kwabena Diawuo Owusu II, presided over the ceremony on behalf of the Omanhene of Berekum, Daasebre Dr. Amankona Diawuo II.
Osabarimah Kwabena Diawuo Owusu II pledged the unflinching support of Nananom to the Association and advised its leadership to remain focused and eschew all divisive tendencies.
Present at the programme were the Berekum Municipal Chief Executive, Kofi Adjei and the former MP and Deputy Minister of Local Government, Capt. Nkrabea Effa-Dartey and several other dignitaries.
Several thousands of Ghana cedis were realized during the fundraising segment of the programme.
